A scandal was reported in The Rage on June 29, when a site for gay footy fans had its pants pulled down by the AFL Players Association, which did not like the idea of its members' aesthetic qualities being appreciated:

Photos of AFL footballers have been removed from a website for gay footy fans after legal threats by the AFL Players Association...

 

Visitors to the website post photos of players, usually sourced elsewhere on the internet, in a photo gallery at www.gayfooty.com.au.

 

In a letter to the website administrator on April 13, players association legal services consultant Bernie Shinners said the photos were "of significant concern" to players. "Photographs that show a player in a socially embarrassing position such as in the showers and in various states of undress are defamatory …" he said...

 

Site visitors were outraged by the association's action, believing it was driven by homophobia.

 

Mr Shinners denied players were concerned about being associated with a gay website, saying the concern was about privacy.

Visitors to gayfooty.com.au who visit the site in search of the much-hyped "photo gallery" are now instead greeted with the following disappointing confession:

"Due to alleged concerns expressed by the AFLPA on behalf of some of their members we have removed the Picture Gallery from the site."
